5 Ways to Detox Without Starving Yourself

Detoxing can be an overwhelming subject, especially if you don't like being hungry, as many people think that detoxing your body means you starve.  Starving your body is called a "fast" and fasting is a bit different than detoxing.  Personally, I believe for most people detoxing will get way better results than fasting.  There is a way to detox without starving yourself and it happens to be a really healthy way to cleanse toxins out.  In return you can reduce bloating, improve bowel movements, fatigue and irritability/mood imbalances, and even lose weight.

1.  Drink More Water.

Hunger is often confused with dehydration, and it is common for my patients to say when they drink more water they are less hungry.   A good aim is to drink at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, then aim for 100 ounces of water per day.  If you are way below this goal, then work up slowly.

Adding detoxifying foods & herbs to your water can make it more enjoyable too, like:

  • lemon juice
  • cucumber slices
  • watermelon pieces
  • herbs ~ ginger, rosemary, dandelion, cilantro, mint

2.  Detoxification doesn't equal starvation.

Ok, here it is!  Fasting is pretty much about not eating anything.  Granted, it can take the pressure off your digestive system and other organs since they are not being used, yet to get the most out of your efforts, most people are going to do way better detoxing.

To facilitate detox without starving yourself, you want your metabolism functioning at its best.  One of the best ways to get it moving is to eat the right foods at the right time. Eating every 2-3 hours as a rule of thumb will help your body feel nourished, therefore not starving, and will be more willing to release excess fat and toxins.

I often get asked which diet is best for metabolism, and most have been taught to believe that low carb, high fat, high protein diets are best.  They certainly are for some people, however, if you have a slow metabolism, you may do best with a low fat, moderate carb and protein diet.

3.  Eat Detoxifying Foods.

It is important to nourish your body daily with foods that are going to facilitate detoxification.  Most fruits and vegetables, and aim for twice as many vegetables than fruits.

Here are a few to start...

  • Beets & Beet Greens ~ Yes, eat the greens too!  This offers substantial support to both phases of liver detoxification which is essential when cleansing.
  • Fermented Foods, like raw sauerkraut, kim chi, kombucha, water kefir
  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar to help balance blood sugar and improve digestive function.
  • Cruciferous Vegetables, including broccoli, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and asparagus.  These help with detoxification, plus support thyroid function.
  • Avocado.  Be careful here! Avocados have glutathione which is a great detoxifier and has become a key player in longevity, but it is easy to overeat fats, especially yummy ones like avocado.  Remember, you want to keep your metabolism up as much as possible and fats may not be a superstar for you.

4. Drink Green Smoothies.

Green smoothies are a bit of a rage right now, and rightly so. Green smoothies are chock full of nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables which are broken down into tiny particles which makes digesting them so much easier.

 There is a lot to be said about the state of our food supply and the deficiencies that are prominent even in fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, and I often say "I wish I could tell you to just eat more salads"... but our foods are so depleted that for most people with whom I consult are so far down a path of dysfunction that straight food really isn't going to get them to where they want to be, so I put them on a very specific supplement protocol to help them reach their goals. That being said, drinking green smoothies everyday is a fabulous way to get more of those nutrients in!  The more nutrition you can absorb, the better your body functions. Bottom line.

5.  Take A Break From Food At Night.

This is often called intermittent fasting, which simply means just taking a break from food for an extended period of time .  If you eat your last detoxifying meal at 6pm, and start back up in the morning around 6am, you have given yourself 12 hours without food. There are so many benefits to this way of living, including slowing the aging process, protecting from cancer, and much more.

Instead of eating something when you have the late night munchies, consider drinking a hot cup of tea, or blending a tiny bit of tart cherry juice (my favorite brand here.
